| Objective To determine the radon concentration levels and their seasonal variations in partial greenhouses across Sichuan province, China. Methods From January to March 2025, radon concentrations in 18 representative greenhouses covering plastic, glass, and multi-span greenhouses across six cities (Meishan, Guangyuan, Ya'an, Deyang, Luzhou, and Dazhou) in Sichuan province were measured using CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors, with contemporaneous non-greenhouse environments as controls. Among the 18 greenhouses, seven were selected for continuous radon concentration monitoring across four seasons. Meanwhile, three plastic greenhouses in Meishan were selected for 24-hour radon concentration measurements using RAD7 radon detectors. Soil 226Ra activity concentrations were determined using gamma-ray spectrometry. All measurements were subjected to statistical analysis using the R software. Results Partial greenhouses across Sichuan exhibited winter radon concentrations ranging from 26 to 548 Bq/m3, with a median of 63 Bq/m3(IQR: 44-92 Bq/m3). Radon concentrations differed among the three greenhouse types, decreasing in the order of plastic greenhouses, glass greenhouses, and multi-span greenhouses. The greenhouses exhibited higher winter radon concentrations than non-greenhouse control environments, with statistically significant differences (H = 5.06, P < 0.05). In Sichuan province, unventilated greenhouses exhibited higher winter radon concentrations than naturally or mechanically ventilated greenhouses, with statistically significant differences (H = 11.42, P < 0.05). The radon concentrations across the six cities also exhibited statistically significant differences (H = 13.05, P < 0.05), with decreasing in the order of Meishan, Guangyuan, Ya'an, Luzhou, Deyang, and Dazhou. Similarly, the radon concentrations across four seasons also showed statistically significant differences (H = 56.50, P < 0.05), decreasing in the order of winter, autumn, summer, and spring. The 226Ra activity concentrations in soil were estimated at 21-67 Bq/kg. Regarding diurnal variations, the radon concentrations in plastic greenhouses gradually increased after 1:00, peaked at around 8:00, gradually declined after 9:00, and reached the minimum at around 17:00. Conclusions Radon concentrations in greenhouses across Sichuan Province are associated with ventilation, greenhouse type, and season. Improving ventilation can effectively reduce indoor radon concentrations, thereby reducing the risk of exposure to radon posed to greenhouse workers. |
