Abstract::
      Objective To investigate the radioactivity levels in the diet of adult residents around Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant.Methods 90 samples of 88 types were collected from eight broad categories of foods locally grown, produced, and primarily consumed by local residents. The samples, that have been through treatment, were analyzed for specific activities of 131I, 137Cs, 134Cs, 110mAg, 60Co, 58Co, 226Ra and 228Ra using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometer, for 90Sr using extraction chromatography using 2-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate extraction, for 3H and 14C using furnace oxidation combustion method, and for 210Po and 210Pb using resin separation. The committed effective doses to adult residents in Fuqing from dietary intake were assessed by referencing data on per capita consumption of eight broad categories of food in Fujian. Results The detection rates of 210Po, 210Pb, 90Sr, and 14C in 90 food samples were 100%, 226Ra 85.56% and 228Ra 87.78%, and 137Cs 32.22%, respectively. None were detected of 131I, 58Co, 60Co, 134Cs, 110mAg, and 3H. The average specific activities in food samples were 137Cs (0.037±0.009), 90Sr (0.077±0.010), 14C (20.5±1.8), 210Po(6.8±1.8), 210Pb (0.427±0.032), 226Ra (0.171±0.015), and 228Ra (0.245±0.023) Bq/kg, respectively. Of 90 samples, the activity concentrations of 210Po in 12 samples of aquatic products were larger than 15 Bq/kg. The committed effective dose from dietary intake to adult residents was estimated to be 96.17 μSv. The radioactivity in aquatic products, grains, and vegetables contributed more than 88.5% of total dose in the present study, with 210Po and 210Pb accounting for more than 72.3% of the total of which 31.52% from 210Po in aquatic products. Conclusions Natural radionuclides were the main source of adult doses from the dietary intake in Fuqing. The annual effective dose to adult residents in Fuqing from dietary intake was below the IAEA-recommended guidance level for radioactivity in food.
