| Radiotherapy represents a primary treatment modality for head and neck malignant tumors. However, the resulting radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) significantly reduces patients' quality of life (QoL), for which there is a lack of effective preventive measures presently. In recent years, many novel approaches in radiotherapy have emerged, aimed at reducing RIBI. Among these, ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) has attracted widespread attention as it can maintain the inhibitory effect on tumor tissues while also minimizing radiation damage to normal tissues. Based on a review of relevant literature from China or abroad, this study presents a comparison between the biological effects of FLASH and conventional radiotherapy (CONV-RT) on RIBI and explores possible mechanisms by which FLASH irradiation alleviates RIBI. These efforts are expected to provide a theoretical basis for the clinical translation of FLASH-RT. |
