Abstract::
      Objective To determine the 3H and 14C radioactivity levels in seafood commonly consumed by residents in the Zhoushan area, Zhejiang province, and to provide data for assessing the radiation-induced health risks caused by seafood consumption. Methods From March to October in 2024, a total of 14 samples encompassing five categories of daily-consumed seafood (i.e., fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, and seaweed) were purchased from docks in the Shengsi and Putuo areas, Zhejiang province. The radioactivity concentrations of tissue-free water tritium (TFWT), organically bound tritium (OBT), and 14C in the seafood were determined. Results The TFWT and OBT radioactivity concentrations in some seafood were lower than their minimum detectable activity (MDA), ranging from < MDA to 1.37 Bq/kg (fresh weight) and from < MDA to 0.79 Bq/kg (fresh weight), respectively. Both were lower than the concentration limits specified in Limited concentrations of radioactive materials in foods (GB 14882-1994). The 14C radioactivity concentrations were also determined, ranging from 2.90 to 82.77 Bq/kg (fresh weight). Conclusions In the Zhoushan area, the 3H and 14C radioactivity levels are far lower than the limits stipulated in the related standard, representing the background levels.
