| Abstract:: |
| Objective Based on a high-purity germanium gamma spectrometer, 28 types of food samples collected in terms of seven broad categories in Wuxi city between 2023 and 2024 were analyzed for radioactivity, together with the contents of 40K, 226Ra, 238U, 232Th, and 137Cs measured, respectively. By comparing analytical result with domestic and international standards, together with the levels of radioactivity in food from different regions of China, the present study assessed the levels of radioactivity in foods in the city. Methods Totally 28 food samples collected during the period 2023-2024 were analyzed by using a HPGe gamma spectrometer. Results Only the natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra, 238U, 232Th and the artificial radionuclide 137Cs were detected. The detection rate of radionuclides in samples was 40K 100%, 226Ra 36%, 238U in 18%, 232Th 36% and 137Cs 14%. Of 28 food samples, radioactivity content of 40K was from 2.771 to 1 036.27 Bq/kg, 226Ra 0.01 Bq/kg to 4.863 Bq/kg, 238U 0.435 to 8.912 Bq/kg, and 232Th 0.042 to 3.85 Bq/kg; 137Cs was detected only in four samples of milk powders, with a content from 0.059 to 0.653 Bq/kg. Conclusions The levels of radioactivity in foods in Wuxi are all lower than the limits given both in domestic and international standards. Rradioactivity levels in foods in the city are at the normal levels compared to other parts of China. |
