Abstract::
      Objective To study the risk level of γ radioactive contamination in food around the first AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant(AP1000).Methods In accordance with of the relevant national standards, food monitoring points were set up within 30 km of the AP1000. Vegetables, grain, livestock and meat, seafood and fresh water products were sampled for the study of radioactivity levels in foods both six years prior to and five years post the commercial operation of the AP1000. Natural radionuclides (40K, 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra) and artificial radionuclides (54Mn, 65Zn, 95Zr, 58Co, 60Co, 106Ru, 110Agm, 125Sb, 131I, 134Cs, 137Cs, 144Ce) in food samples were detected by using HPGe gamma spectrometer. The committed effective doses were estimated on the basis of dose estimation method as recommended by the IAEA to evaluate the health risk before and after the operation of the AP1000.Results No significant differences were found in the levels of natural radioactivity in the foods around the AP1000 before and after the operation. All the artificial radionuclides but 137Cs were found to have the radioactivity levels less than the respective detection lower limit(DLL). The average activity concentration of 137Cs in vegetables, grains, poultry and livestock, seafood and fresh water products was 0.001, 0.004, 0.019, 0.022 Bq/kg, < DLL prior to operation and 0.005 Bq/kg, < DLL, 0.021, 0.005 Bq/kg, < DLL post operation, respectively. The result showed that there was no significant difference in the activity levels of 137Cs in foods before and after the operation. The committed effective dose to local residents surrounding the APP1000 site before and after the plant operation were estimated to be 138.66 and 215.89 μSv, respectively.Conclusions It is concluded that both the radioactivity levels in foods and the health risks to the local residents are found to be negligible after the operation of AP1000.
