Abstract::
      Objective To assess the impacts of normal operation of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (QNPP) on the radioactivity levels in foods in the surrounding areas, and estimate the doses to local adults due to food ingestiion.Methods From 2012 to 2021, locally produced foods within 30 km of the QNPP were monitored. The food types included vegetables, grains, poultry and livestock, tea, milk, freshwater aquatic products, and marine aquatic products. A high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometer was used to analyze the activity concentrations of 137Cs, 134Cs, 58Co, 60Co, 110Agm, 131I, 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K. Data on food consumption by the residents in Zhejiang province were used to estimate the committed effective dose resulting from ingested foods.Results The average activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in various foods within 30 km of the QNPP were estimated to be (0.869 ± 1.758), (0.471 ± 1.280), (0.251 ± 0.640), (123 ± 195) Bq/kg (fresh weight), respectively. The average activity concentration of the 137Cs was (0.017 ± 0.060) Bq/kg, and the maximum activity concentrations of 131I and 110Agm were 0.178 and 0.052 Bq/kg (fresh weight), respectively. The committed effective doses to the local adult residents due to 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 137Cs, 131I or 110Agm, via food ingestion pathway, were estimated to be 6.898, 4.720, 8.676, 149.8, 0.040, 0.001 and 0.000 03 μSv, respectively, totaling 0.170 mSv.Conclusions The activity concentrations of gamma-imitting radionuclides in foods around the QNPP are generally within the range of background fluctuations. The doses resulting from gamma-imitting radionuclides ingested through food pathway are significantly lower than national standard limits, posing the relatively low health risks to the local residents.
