| Since the initiation of the national food radioactivity monitoring program in 2012, China has dedicated over a decade to ensuring the radiological safety of its food supply. This endeavor has been substantially supported by the widespread application of advanced analytical techniques, including high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry, low-background alpha/beta counting, and liquid scintillation counting. By the end of 2024, a total of 13 698 samples have been monitored, yielding 117 800 data. In recent years, a new wave of research initiatives for food radiological safety has emerged. Scientific teams have focused on optimizing radionuclide detection technologies, monitoring key geographical areas, and assessing public dose levels. These efforts have promoted the development of an integrated monitoring-assessment-control scientific paradigm. This special issue highlights the latest advancements in food radioactivity monitoring and risk assessment, compiling 10 research articles that summarize, analyze, and report the significant outcomes in this field. This paper provides a concise analysis and summary of the current status and challenges of food radioactivity monitoring in China. It puts forward strategic recommendations to enhance the prevention and control of food safety incidents. The insights presented are intended to contribute to the formulation of the "15th Five-Year Plan" with the goal of further advancing China′s food radioactivity monitoring capabilities and supporting the "Healthy China" initiative. |
