Abstract:: |
Objective To investigate the swallowing kinematics of the hyoid bone after radiotherapy by video-fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). Methods This experiment was a prospective clinical study. Between October 2014 and May 2015, a total of 25 eligible patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma received video-fluoroscopic swallowing exams by X-Ray simulator. All swallowing videos had been fast continuously captured through video analysis software. The duration of deglutition, the displacement and the average velocity of the hyoid bone were analyzed. Results The mean duration of swallowing after treatment was significantly longer [(1.38±0.23)s vs. (1.12±0.26)s, t=-9.53, P<0.05]. The hyoid horizontal displacement (HHD) after treatment was reduced [(0.78±0.24) cm vs. (1.01±0.25) cm, t=5.82, P<0.05]. The hyoid vertical displacement (HVD) after treatment was reduced [(0.78±0.18)cm vs. (1.01±0.25)cm, t=2.56, P<0.05]. The average velocity of the hyoid bone after treatment was also reduced [(0.83±0.19)cm/s vs. (1.31±0.45)cm/s, t=6.46, P<0.05]. There was no significant difference in the displacement of laryngeal before and after radiotherapy(P>0.05). Conclusions The duration of swallowing after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients is significantly longer, while the displacements and the average velocity of the hyoid bone are reduced.
