| Dental radiology, a primary branch of oral medicine and radiology, plays a vital role in the accurate diagnosis of pathologies, such as dental and periodontal lesions. Dental X-ray examinations, one of the most common radiology procedures in clinical practice, are performed using intra- and extra-oral dental X-ray equipment. Among these, the former is used for apical radiographs, while the latter is utilized for panoramic radiography, cephalometric radiography, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Different types of dental X-ray equipment are characterized by varying examination modes and effective doses of patient, with dental CBCT examinations featuring a higher effective dose. Despite the low effective dose of patient under a single dental X-ray examination, frequent exposure may lead to an increased risk of parotid gland tumors or thyroid cancer. Therefore, conducting radiation dose assessment and analysis and establishing diagnostic reference levels for different dental X-ray examinations can provide a scientific basis and a practical guide for clinical practice and radiation protection. |
