Abstract::
      Objective To understand the changes in 90Y radioactivity in the urine of patients following transarterial 90Y-labeled resin microsphere for the embolization treatment of liver tumors and to provide data for radiological protection management of the patients. Methods Five liver tumor patients treated with 90Y-labeled resin microspheres were selected in this study. Both the information on their administration dose and their urine samples at 1 d (0-24 h), 2 d (24-48 h), and 3 d (48-72 h) after treatment were collected. The 90Y radioactivity in the urine samples was determined. The excretion rate of 90Y was calculated as the ratio of the 90Y radioactivity in urine at the middle sampling time every day to the radioactivity of the medication initially injected. Results The administration doses to the five patients ranged from 0.630 to 3.000 GBq. The average urine excretion rates of 90Y in the first three days were determined at 0.1671% (0.1358%-0.2276%), 0.0099% (0.0067%-0.0125%), and 0.0066% (0.0051%-0.0080%), respectively. The 90Y radioactivity in the urine of the patients showed a positive correlation with the administration dose, while the 90Y radioactivity concentration exhibited a negative correlation with the urine volume. Conclusions The 90Y-labeled resin microsphere for the embolization treatment of liver tumors can cause high radioactivity and radioactivity concentration of 90Y in the urine of patients, necessitating appropriate treatment and enhanced radiological protection management in the ward.
