Abstract::
      Objective To investigate the morphological changes of rat liver after exposed to high power microwave (HPM). Methods Thirty-six SD rats were divided into two groups: the experimental group (n=24) treated with HPM and the normol control group (n=12). The rats were sacrificed at different time points (6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days after exposure to HPM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy were used to observe the changes in the liver. Results In the control group, normal hepatocytes and hepatic plates were observed. At 6 hours after exposure to HPM, a mild hepatocyte swelling was seen. At 24 hours after exposure to HPM, sinusoidal stenosis and hepatocyte swelling were observed. At 48 hours after exposure to HPM, remarkable degeneration of hepatocytes and evidently distorted hepatic plates were noted. Besides, over all vacuolization of hepatocyte and widespread congestion in the sinusoids were also found.On day 7 after exposure slightly swelled hepatocytes and hepatic plates in good order were seen. Vasculation could be observed around the central vein. The congestion was mild. Conclusion Exposure to HPM might lead to morphological change of hepatocytes and sinusoidal congestion, which could be related with heat effect, electric field effect and ionization.
