Abstract::
      Objective To investigate the effect of immunologic function of fucoidan at different doses given preventively to rats exposed to γ-rays and its mechanism. Methods The Wistar rats were given fucoidan at different doses o rally for 10 d before whole-body irradiation with 60Coγ-rays.The r elated indexes of humoral,cellular and nonspecific immunologic functions and apo ptosis ratio of lymphocytes were measured 18 hs later. Results Fucoidan at 100 mg/kg was able to significantly enhance the ability of prolifera tion responses of T,B lymphocytes,the number and phagocytosis of macrophage,seru m hemolysin contents,the delayed type hypersensitivity response (DTH) of rats ex posed to γ-rays and to reduce apoptosis ratio of lymphocytes in irradiated rat s.There were dose-effect relationships in these observation indexes of the fuco idan groups.There were significant differences between these indexes of the fuco idan groups and those of the positive control group (P<0.01). Conclusion These results indicate that fucoidan as an immunoregulatory chemical could promo te the recovery of immunologic function in irradiated rats.The mechanism is asso ciated with the arrest of lymphocyte apoptosis by fucoidan.
