Objective To investigate the effect of glucagon-like peptide 2(GLP-2) on recovery of intestinal epithelial function from radiation injury in mice. Methods Kunming mice received a single dose of 8 Gy total-body irradiation from 60 Co gamma-rays followed by treatment with GLP-2 or vehicle.Intestinal permeability, plasma endotoxin content, glucose absorption, and sucrase and lactase activities were measured on days 1, 3, 5 after treatment. Results In irradiated mice intestinal permeability and glucose absorption were significantly higher, and sucrase and lactase activities lower than those in normal mice on days 1, 3, 5(P<0.01 or P<005).Plasma endotoxin content in irradiated mice on days 1, 3 was significantly higher than that in the normal mice (P<0.01 or P<0.05).In GLP-2-treated mice, intestinal permeability, glucose absorption, and plasma endotoxin content restored to normal on day 3 sucrase and lactase activities restored to normal on day 5. Conclusion GLP-2 can promote recovery of intestinal mucosal barrier function, digestion and absorption function from radiation injury. |
