Abstract::
      The dosimetrical basis of the national standard of gross a and gross β activities in drinking water and its application are discussed in this paper. The limits of gross a and gross β activities in Sanitary Standard for Drinking Water are actually screening values rather than limits. When a screening value is exceeded, more detailed radionuclide analysis is necessary. Higher values do not necessarily imply that the water is unsuitable for human consumption.
