| Objective To compare the levels of occupational radiation exposure of aircrew between polar and non-polar routes on the same international route based on the CARI-7A calculation program and assess the impact of polar routes on radiation exposure levels, in orcler to provide a scientific basis for route planning and radiation protection of aircrews. Methods Through the flightaware website, 26 pairs of round-trip routes (a total of 156 flights) were selected. Each pair of routes included one polar route (crossing above 78°N latitude) and one non-polar route, covering three solar activity levels in April 2014, February 2017, and December 2019. The effective dose received by the aircrew of each flight was calculated using CARI-7A. Additionally, the data were collected on flight duration, average cruise altitude, solar radio flux index (F10.7), and geomagnetic activity index (Kp). A linear mixed-effect model was constructed with a polar or non-polar route as the main fixed effect, the other factors as covariates, and flight number as the random effect, so as to assess the impact of polar route on the effective dose received by aircrew. Results The effective dose received by the aircrew on polar routes was estimated to be (61.43 ± 20.18) μSv, higher than that on non-polar routes (47.94 ± 14.90) μSv. Model analysis showed that, after controlling covariates, the effective dose received by the aircrew on polar routes was higher than that on non-polar routes (β=9.61, P<0.05). The marginal determination coefficient R2 and the conditional determination coefficient R2 of the model were both 0.99. Conclusions Polar routes significantly elevated the level of cosmic radiation exposure of aircrew, on which latitude has an important impact. The result of this study is aimed to provide a reference for airlines to carry out route planning and risk assessment. |
